Codependency only exists in relationships with addiction.

Did you know? It can occur between spouses, romantic partners, parents and children, friends, or colleagues, and they are not exclusively linked to situations involving substance abuse.

Codependency is an official mental health disorder.

Did you know? It refers to a dysfunctional relationship pattern or behavior but is not classified as a mental health diagnosis..

You’re either codependent or you’re not.

Did you know? Individuals exhibit varying degrees of codependency depending on their life experiences. This spectrum spans from those who show no signs to those experiencing severe signs.

People with codependency are weak or immature.

Did you know? The behaviors of people struggling with this reflect learned patterns from their upbringing, where they observed and adopted specific ways of interacting with others. These individuals have often navigated through adversity. Codependency should be viewed not as a sign of weakness or immaturity, but rather as a coping mechanism to fulfill emotional needs and manage the impacts of childhood trauma.

Codependency can’t be overcome.

Did you know? Recovery is achievable through treatment. Individuals can examine the behaviors learned in childhood, recognizing any unhealthy aspects. They can then develop healthier coping strategies for managing trauma and fulfilling their emotional needs. Did you know? Dr. Butler offers support groups and counseling.
